WARNING! This is only a theory and has not been confirmed by CIPSOFT. I am not a linguist, and this article was written as a hobby. There may be translation errors.

  1. Introduction
Tibia has a fantastic history. A multitude of mysteries and puzzles drive players to explore the world further. Among them are unknown languages, including the language of the orcs. Only the meaning of some words has been confirmed through interactions with NPCs. The rest are guesses. In this article, I would like to contribute to the attempt to understand the origins of the Orcish language and also try to translate the words spoken or written by the green creatures.
  2. Lore
Zathroth, one of the gods, noticed the wicked instinct of Fafnar and her destructive powers and decided to seduce her. The fruit of this union was Brog – the Mad Titan, who had the ability to create life. The Titan's first creation was Garsharak, who gave rise to the race of dragons. Due to his vanity, Brog also created cyclopes, beings similar to himself. Seeing his son's potential, Zathroth ordered him to create a race more terrifying and destructive than the cyclopes. Thus, trolls and goblins were created, but his greatest creation turned out to be the orcs – fearsome creatures living solely to rule and reproduce.
Orcs developed a sense of community in which they live. Some races believe they can sense the feelings of their kin. They have their own language, and although they can learn the languages of other humanoids, they rarely choose to do so. More educated orcs can use human letters to write orcish texts. They also have their own written language, but nowadays, few can read it.
Clues regarding the orcish language are mainly found on Rookgaard – the beginners' island. One of the few pieces of information we encounter is the story of a traveler described in a book in the academy's libraries. He came across a group of green-skinned creatures talking in their language. The author notes their greeting. One of them said 'charach,' and the other responded in the same way.
I overheard the green-skinned brutes. 'charach' (or so) one said, and the other responded the same way, then they began to chat in their strange language, certainly talking about some gruesome plot against mankind.
We learn more words from one of the inhabitants of Rookgaard – Amber – a traveler and adventurer. She is one of the few who returned to the island from the mainland. She clashed with orcs several times and was captured by them, becoming their prisoner for several months. She will reveal phrases like 'mok' and 'burp' for free, and others for salmon.
    Stonetitus [73] : yes
Amber: It's 'mok' in Orcish. I tell you more if you bring me some food.
    Stonetitus [73]: no
Amber: In Orcish that's 'burp'. I tell you more if you bring me some food.
    Amber
: Thank you. Orcs call arrows 'pixo'.

In the northern parts of Rookgaard, we find dungeons occupied by Minotaurs and their slaves – the orcs. The cave complex consists of 3 hideouts, where the most interesting room for language analysis is the one called Bear Room. There, we find barrels of water, equipment meant for combat, but not only that. In the chests, there are also bottles, a gift, pottery, a rope, scrolls, etc., and most importantly, 3 books written in the language of the green-skinned.
    orc books
The game's creators likely intended to enable conversation with Blind Orc – a blacksmith on a rock in the northern part of Rookgaard. The orc cannot see who he is talking to, so we can trick him by communicating in his language. By knowing basic phrases and texts from the books, through trial and error, we can reach a full dialogue. We gain certainty about some key words, for which we receive specific rewards. I will present a full list of words along with their probable translation in the further part of the article.
In the western part of the Facc area, we find the orc fortress. Before the area of the green-skinned monsters, two signs warn us with the inscriptions 'FuTCHi MaRuK buTA!' and 'BuRP HuMAk BaTASh!'. A guard protects access to the fortress. When trying to enter, we will not be allowed inside. At the same time, the orc will address us with 'Humak! Fetchi!'. The only way to get past is to disguise ourselves as an orc by completing one of the parts of the Rookie Guard Quest.

  3. Cipsoft
What clues does CIPSOFT give us? Asking an open-ended question about the origin of the orcish language would likely end the same way as all other Tibian puzzles – with no concrete answer. So I used my ticket to ask who created it. Solkrin answered me.
    knightmare
The answer was clear; Knightmare was primarily responsible for creating the orcish language. In one of his interviews on TibiaBR.com from May 9, 2010, we find a question directly related to Tibian languages.
TibiaBRTibian languages, such as the Orc Language and the Beholder Language, were they created in a well-worked way, with grammar rules and everything, just like Sindarin and other Tolkien languages?
KnightmareThe orc language was an early quest device. Admittedly, probably too complicated and spoiler-vulnerable for a closed environment like Rookgaard but it was very basic. Even the stuff the orc monsters are saying had (partly) some meaning but most of it was never formally written down and it would be rather hard even for me to reconstruct it. The beholder language is a completely different issue though. We hired an actual beholder to write down texts for us. It resides still in the company basement and refuses to leave. The screaming of the dwarfs we have to feed him once a day haunts us even in our dreams. The worst thing is we have no means to tell if the beholder actually wrote down what we dictated him. Chances are his texts are some tasteless jokes and bad beholder poetry. Yet no one in the office had the guts to voice our doubts towards the beholder. Have you ever heard of the CipSoft employee Hans Christian Strakeldum? No? Neither have we since he went down into the cellar to tell the beholder to stop whistling that loud ...”
The orcish language was thus primarily intended for completing a quest – obtaining salmon, then exchanging it for learned words, which ultimately led to purchasing a bow and arrows. However, the statement also reveals that even the words spoken by the orcs had some meaning, although nowadays it would be difficult even for its creator to reconstruct them.
  4. Translation
A simple rumor that the orcish language is based on Proto-Slavic and Proto-Indo-European languages was enough for me to delve seriously into the topic. In the following part of the article, I will try to convince you that there is something to it and encourage further exploration.
    • Methodology
I began my analysis in 2022, using books and online resources. I returned to the topic years later, believing in the value of my work and that it could contribute to a better understanding of the world of Tibia. New tools, such as the popular and effective ChatGPT, helped me further analyze. Additional confirmation by OpenAI gave me the courage to write this article.
    • Assumptions
Before starting the analysis, I assumed that the orcish language is very simplified and does not have equivalents for everything around us. This means that, for example, "water" might be called "something that flows" and this term could be used for many other things. It's worth noting that terms like "Tulak bora" (studded armor) and "Grofa" (studded helmet), although both pieces of equipment are described as "studded" in the human language, do not have a word in orcish that corresponds to this description. One piece of armor is described by two words, and the other by just one, suggesting that orcs describe the objects around them in a more practical and less literal way.
Orcs, as a primitive race, do not have a developed syntax, and their language resembles today's "Me Tarzan, You Jane." Their speech also contains many onomatopoeic words, or sound-imitating expressions.
    • Confirmation of the thesis
To confirm the thesis regarding the primitiveness of the orcish language, I prepared a table presenting the sounds made by orcs speaking in the human language."
      Monster Sound

I need your ears for my belt!
      Orcs will rule!
As seen in the above table, the orcish language is a bestial language. It lacks syntax and complex sentences. The next step was to confirm the known words with their counterparts in proto-languages and their translations. Below, I have created a table that shows these correlations.
Appearance of the item Orcish Terms Known Translation Translation derived from Proto-Indo-European or Proto-Slavic
Aka bora Leather armor Plow animal carry
      Bata Armor/helmet Strike
Batuk Bow Bow (shape) or strike here
Burka Short sword Emit deep dull sounds
Burka bata Sword Emit deep dull sounds tool for striking
      Burp No -
      Charach(Greeting) Snort or grunt
      Charcha Sabre Cut
Donga Brass shield Shield or something that resonates
      Dora Shield Hold firmly, support
      Futchi (Farewell) Fly
Goshak Buy Impose a fine, take someone’s money, rob
Grofa Studded helmet Rough, raw, unprocessed, or heavy
Hakhak Axe Hook or to hook
      Mok Yes -
      Pashak Sell Cook or shepherd
Pixo 10x Arrows Fragment or small part
Tulak bora Studded armor Endure/protection wear
As you can see, there are many words here that have their understandable translations. None of them are literal, but it is clear that there is something to it. I don't believe these translations are merely coincidental. Words like 'Aka bora' in translation refer to animals intended for pulling a plow, such as draft animals like horses, mules, donkeys, or cattle, and it could be from these animals that the leather intended for wearing, or in other words, leather armor, could have come. The same goes for the other translations. None of this is stated directly, but rather in a way that a primitive race might have described the world around them.
    • Dictionary
These tables offered at least a glimmer of hope that the orcish language can indeed be translated in such a way that the meaning of the expressions and other content can be understood. In the next table, I will present a list of words that I managed to gather, their etymology, and translations found in books, on the internet, and using ChatGPT. The part that was done based on my own research comes from 2022. Everything has been confirmed multiple times by OpenAI.

    • Dialogue Translation with the Blind Orc
The context of much, if not all, of the dialogue with the Blind Orc has been understood for years. For this reason, this dialogue is a great example that can confirm some of the assumptions about the orc language. In this section, I will attempt to translate the player's and the blacksmith's phrases according to the previously prepared dictionary. The entire conversation will be adjusted to be easily digestible for the reader.

      Player: Hi.
      Blind Orc
: Buta humak! – Arrogant man.

      Player: Charach. – Hello.
Blind Orc: Ikem Charach maruk - I greet the softie.
Player: Ikem goshak. – I am buying.
Blind Orc: Ikem pashak porak, bata, dora. Ba goshak maruk? – I sell a tool with a handle, a striking tool, a supporting tool. What are you buying, softie?

Player: Goshak bata. – I am buying a striking tool.
Blind Orc: Ikem pashak aka bora, tulak bora, grofa. Ba goshak maruk? - I sell a plow beast for carrying, something durable for carrying, something heavy (rough). What are you buying, softie?

Player: Goshak aka bora / tulak bora / grofa. – I am buying a plow beast for carrying / something durable for carrying / something heavy (rough).
Blind Orc: Maruk goshak ta? – Softie buys this?
      Player: Mok. – Yes.

    • Written Texts
Before proceeding with further translations, it is worth mentioning a book written by one of the minotaurs in Minotaur Hell to understand the role of orcs in the Rookgaard system.
As seen, orcs were enslaved by minotaurs and subordinated as slaves. This will be important in the further translation of books written by orcs. In the first one, we find the following text:
taka arash ouk karak minotaur batash ferut ouk taka minotaur karakim kiskesh ORC BUTA BANA BUTA BANA
Catch the target but tough minotaur
      strike transfer but catch
      minotaur wounded lies
      ORC PROUDLY STRIKES PROUDLY STRIKES

In the next book, Omark and Booz are understood as names. In the two remaining books, all words are written in lowercase or entirely in uppercase as something emotional, so they do not use capital letters or sentences ending with a period, etc. It seems this is a form of politeness or respect.
Southern German and Swiss German: regional (Alemannic) nickname from Middle High German boese "funny person, lowly servant" or from the ancient Germanic name Bozo.
Would Jester Bozo be an even more interesting character, or is it just a coincidence?
Omark ikem goshak ba batuk Booz karek utash gort mora
      ouk bota bana ikem
Omark bought me a bow or Omark I bought a bow
      Booz complains entry upstairs nightmare
      but I strike

There are also two signs at Rookgaard in front of the orc territory. They read:
      FuTCHi MaRuK buTA
      Get out, arrogant softie
      and
      BuRP HuMAk BaTASh!
      Not for striking by human!
  6. Summary
In this article, I conducted a detailed analysis of the orc language based on available clues and assumptions. This language, although not fully understood, is an important narrative element that adds depth and mystery to the game. From the available sources and my own research, I was able to create a hypothetical orc language dictionary, which I hope will serve as a tool for better understanding the world of Tibia and further research on this topic. Although some information is based on conjecture, I believe this is a good introduction to further work.
